TAKENO Cycle & Train: Foldable Electric Bicycle Cycle & Train Project will be implemented to promote the use of the JR San-in Main Line.
1. Project Overview
The Takeno Regional Public Transportation Promotion Committee will implement the “TAKENO Cycle & Train” project, which uses foldable electric bicycles to promote the use of the JR San-in Main Line between Kinosaki-Onsen Station and Hamasaka Station.
This project is not simply a bicycle rental service. It is a new tourism transportation model that combines regional sightseeing by bicycle with travel by JR train, with the aim of encouraging visitors, particularly tourists, to use public transportation.
In particular, the project will establish sightseeing routes in which participants return by JR train, thereby encouraging the use of Takeno Station, Kasumi Station, Hamasaka Station, and other stations along the San-in Main Line.
In the future, we aim to introduce a cycle train service, allowing bicycles to be carried onto trains without being folded. This project will serve as a practical first step toward that goal by using foldable electric bicycles.
2. Background and Challenges
In the Takeno area, the declining population and decrease in local users have resulted in a decline in the number of passengers using the JR San-in Main Line, including Takeno Station, which is an important transportation hub for local residents commuting to work and school.
At the same time, Kinosaki-Onsen Station attracts approximately 900,000 visitors annually, including approximately 100,000 international visitors, demonstrating its significant tourism potential.
The Takeno area also receives more than 1,000 tourists using local transportation services annually. Going forward, new measures aimed at promoting JR use among tourists, in addition to local residents, will be necessary.
3. Future Goals
Demonstration of a Cycle Train Service
JR San-in Main Line: Kinosaki-Onsen – Hamasaka
This project is a new regional revitalization initiative that combines tourism and public transportation.
By encouraging tourists to use JR, the project aims to contribute to:
- Maintaining and strengthening regional transportation
- Increasing tourism-related spending
- Increasing the number of passengers using local railway stations

- Establishing sustainable tourism and transportation models
Furthermore, by utilizing the spectacular scenery and natural resources unique to the San-in Kaigan area, we aim to achieve both sustainable regional transportation and tourism development.
